Step 1: Agree on The Design, Materials and Quote

Material Selection: We'll guide you in selecting high-quality materials, emphasizing the use of durable plywood (ply) over MDF for enhanced strength and longevity.
Sketch: We'll create a detailed sketch of the understair storage so you can visualize how it will integrate into your space.
Quote: Based on the dimensions, materials, and specific components of your understair storage, we'll provide a comprehensive quote and project timeline.
Step 2: The Frame and Structure
Positioning the Frame: We'll carefully position the assembled frame beneath your staircase, securing it to the wall and existing structure with brackets or screws for maximum stability.
Frame Construction: Using premium plywood, we'll assemble the main frame with precision, ensuring it's square and level. Wood glue and screws will reinforce the structure for added durability.
Drawer Construction: We'll craft sturdy drawers from plywood, assembling the sides, back, and front panels. High-quality drawer runners will be installed on the sides of the drawers and inside the storage unit to ensure smooth operation and long-lasting endurance.
Shaker Doors: If chosen, we'll assemble shaker-style doors by joining the stiles and rails, and then inserting the central panel. Everything is secured with wood glue and clamps until fully set.
Step 3: Installing Doors and Drawers and the Finishes
Door and Drawer Installation: We'll install the doors onto the frame and ensure perfect alignment. Drawers will be fitted onto super robust drawer runners to guarantee long-term performance (we usually use 100kg runners).
Hardware Installation: Your choice of handles or knobs and any additional hardware will be attached to enhance both functionality and style.
Finishing Touches: We'll apply your choice of stain or paint to achieve the desired finish, followed by a clear sealant internally to protect the wood. This not only enhances the appearance but also extends the life of your storage unit.
Extras: We can also add integrated LED lighting, charging stations or plug sockets, or custom shelving, we'll plan these into the design from the outset to ensure seamless integration.
Here’s an example of custom understair storage we created in East Dulwich, South East London. The storage units are crafted in oak, with veneered MDF used for the carcasses and solid oak for the drawers. Designed with a classic shaker style, the units feature a combination of shaker doors and drawers, maximizing storage in an otherwise underutilized space. Each section includes custom shelving and drawers tailored for easy organization, with LED lights and plug sockets installed for added convenience. The lights are sensor-activated, illuminating the storage as soon as it’s accessed.
The exterior was painted to match the home’s decor, complemented by matte black hardware for a cohesive and refined look. The oak interior offers a premium, durable finish that enhances the space, blending seamlessly with the classic style of the home while adding modern functionality.
